What Are Polarized Lenses?

Polarized lenses refer to a special type of lens treatment designed to reduce glare from light. The lenses are coated in a unique chemical filter that blocks certain light waves, making them incredibly effective for improving visual clarity and reducing strain, especially in bright or reflective environments.

Unlike regular lenses, polarized eyeglasses work to eliminate the blinding glare that occurs when light bounces off flat surfaces like water, snow, or roads. This makes them a favorite choice for outdoor enthusiasts, drivers, and anyone looking for a sharper view of the world around them.

How Do Polarized Lenses Work?

Light rays reflect off a flat surface and become horizontally aligned, creating a concentrated and often harsh glare. Polarized lenses are equipped with a vertical filter that blocks these horizontal light waves.

Think of it like a finely tuned gatekeeper for your eyes—they let in useful, vertically aligned light while filtering out distracting and potentially harmful glare. The result? More precise, more comfortable vision.

When Should I Use Polarized Sunglasses?

People who use polarized sunglasses often say they are less tired than usual after hours of battling sun glare. While polarized sunglasses are a good choice for most everyday situations, here are some specific times where you may find them especially helpful:

1)Fishing. People who fish find that polarized sunglasses drastically cut the glare and help them see into the water.

2)Boating. A long day on the water can cause eyestrain. You may also see below the surface of the water better, which is important if you are driving a boat as well.

3)At the beach. Polarized lenses reduce the reflected glare from the water and the sand.

4)Golfing. Some golfers feel that polarized lenses make it hard to read greens well when putting, but studies haven’t all agreed on this issue. Many golfers do find that polarized lenses reduce glare on fairways, and you can remove polarized sunglasses when putting if that’s your preference. Another benefit? Golf balls that find their way into water hazards are easier to spot when wearing polarized lenses.

5)Most snowy environments. Snow causes glare, so a pair of polarized sunglasses are usually a good choice.

When You Shouldn't Wear Polarised Sunglasses?

1)Looking at an LCD screen – Since some LCD screens on phones, ATMs, and car dashboards are already polarised, you may not be able to see them clearly while wearing polarised sunglasses.

2)Driving at night – It’s never safe to wear sunglasses while driving at night. Even though it seems like polarised lenses would reduce glare from the bright light of oncoming headlights and streetlights, they make it too dark to see clearly or drive safely at night.

3)Skiing and other snow sports – Sunlight bouncing off of snow and ice causes glare that can be annoying if you’re wearing non-polarised sunglasses. However, polarised sunglasses might prevent you from seeing ice at all, which can be very dangerous. Your best bet for skiing or snowboarding is getting ski goggles designed specifically for the slopes.
